An electronics duo with two such sensitive souls as Daniel Kordik and madammecell should hardly be described as ‘toxic’, yet neither does the word ‘sweet’ spring to mind. Rich and complex sound forms, featuring gradual and immense crescendos is nearer the mark.
The second group introduces the excellent Brazilian bass clarinetist, Luiz Rocha, playing in London for the first time. He plays with a cohort of ‘sweet’ sounding instruments, and moments of delightfully syrupy sound may indeed happen, with Guillaume Viltard and James Barralet providing a string section.
Sweetness ,however, is strongest with a pinch of salt, and the quartet will surely not wait too long before introducing a little grit. Taken together the groups do indeed provide a rich and unusual contrast, ‘toxic’ only in the sense of a music that reacts and fizzes, like strange chemicals mixed together.
